TEDxUMontana: exciting ideas at the University of Montana
TEDxUMontana speaker Steven Gaskill is an exercise scientist who is changing how we think about a school day.
Why did you want to speak at TEDxUMontana?
The TED talk format is wonderful. My area, the role of physical activity on learning, is a topic that we all understand at some gut level. A few other wonderful leaders have given TED or TEDx talks on specific topics related to youth physical activity and cognition, but nobody is talking about the big picture. We need youth to be physically active throughout the day for both their heart and their minds. I believe that parents and teachers all want their children to be successful and healthy. Exercise is a major key ingredient and I am passionate about it.
What was your reaction when you found out you were selected as a speaker?
I was ecstatic. The timing for the TEDx talk corresponds with our Missoula Summit on Healthy Kids in October and the work to incorporate physical activity throughout the school day in our community that is beginning. Preparing for this TEDx talk has helped me to really think about and focus on the message and methods locally and how they can be implemented globally.
What inspires you about TED talks?
They are a chance to share your creative ideas with the world. They are a chance to help motivate individuals and implement positive change. They are a great communication tool that brings individuals with common goals together.
How do you want to change the world?
Youth health and education should one of our highest priorities. Exercise is truly medicine for both our bodies and to prepare our brains for learning. We know that we can help youth to be healthier and learn better with regular physical activity. I want to see us start in America to take back our personal responsibility with the result being active, engaged and normal weight youth.
What are you passionate about beyond your work?
I am passionate about teaching and student learning. In my personal life I love hiking, cross country skiing, mountaineering, mountain biking, a good glass of wine, coffee in the morning, friends and family.
